The site for the new house sits on the edge of the beach in Porthtowan, on the rugged North Cornish coastline. Our approach for the home of a local family has been to design a sensitive building which works with the existing grain of the landscape, gently tucking the lower ground floor accommodation in behind the existing sand dunes. A lightweight timber box sits at dune level and contains the open plan living spaces and master bedroom, with a substantial glazing to the seaward elevation, taking full advantage of the stunning views out over the Atlantic.
Natural local materials such as reclaimed granite stonework, larch boards and native green roof planting help the building integrate and naturalise with the landscape.
